Advocates of Censorship

While it seems counter-intuitive that organizations within a free-society would actively pursue limiting and restricting the rights of fellow citizens, there are some that do so wholeheartedly. While some may do so for the greater good, others may not. Some of the most prominent organizations pushing for censorship include:

  • The National School Boards Association: The National School Boards Association is a trade association representing school boards across the United States. In October 2021, the NSBA sent a letter to President Biden asking for federal help to address “the disturbing spike in harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence against school board members, administrators, teachers, and staff.” The letter cited specific examples of threats and harassment and called on the Biden administration to take action to protect school officials.
  • The Parents Television Council: The Parents Television Council is a conservative advocacy group that monitors television programming and advocates for stricter content standards. The PTC has been critical of several programs, including “South Park,” “The Simpsons,” and “Game of Thrones.” The PTC has also lobbied for legislation to give parents more control over what their children watch on television.
  • The Family Research Council: The Family Research Council is a conservative Christian organization that opposes abortion, same-sex marriage, and other social issues. The FRC has been critical of several books and movies, including “The Kite Runner” and “The Hunger Games.” The FRC has also lobbied for legislation that would censor these materials.
  • The Southern Poverty Law Center: The Southern Poverty Law Center is a civil rights organization that tracks hate groups and extremism. The SPLC has been critical of several websites and social media platforms, including Breitbart News and InfoWars. The SPLC has also called for these platforms to be censored.
  • The Anti-Defamation League: The Anti-Defamation League is a Jewish civil rights organization that fights anti-Semitism and bigotry. The ADL has been critical of several websites and social media platforms, including Twitter and Facebook. The ADL has also called for these platforms to be more vigilant in removing hate speech.

These are just a few organizations pushing for censorship in the United States. These organizations have different motivations for their advocacy, but they all share a common goal of restricting speech that they find objectionable.

Note that not everyone agrees with these organizations’ censorship efforts. Some people believe that censorship is a violation of free speech, while others believe that it is necessary to protect children or to prevent the spread of hate speech.
